The Compassionate Eye Foundation is a wonderful charity that I am proud to say I have been involved with since its inception in 2005. We just completed our 2011 shoot for them - the revenues from which will help support CEF's many worthwhile initiatives.

Thanks so much to all the people who donated their time and talents to make this year's shoot a success. This includes the fine folks at the West Coast Express railway system and The Marine Mill Bistro in Coal Harbour for providing location support. As well as a great group of talented individuals: Fiona Watson (art director), Patricia Lagmay (stylist), LucyAnne Botham (hair and make-up), Sean Best (camera assistant), Darla Taylor (model), Ruby Ahn (model), Bobby Armstrong (model), and Jesse Martyn (model), .

I recently discovered a great website called SimpleDesktops.com. The site has so many simple and creative wallpaper graphics that I have become a little obsessive, changing up my desktop image every few days. It is the computer equivalent of having a drawer full of graphic t-shirts.

Right now I am rocking "The Dude" by artist Eduardo Satoshi Shiraihi. So good.

RJ Sauer is an amazing director who is looking to Kickstart a new short film project entitled STAG. The screenplay is by the multi-talented artist Micheal Boland, so you know it is going to be twisted and great. carving the mountains

While I am more into "flatland" skateboarding, I do admire longboard cruising for its simplicity and purity. So I was stoked when I came across this beautifully shot video of a group of girl longboarders enjoying the sublime exhilaration of their sport.
This is so going to be my daughter in another 12 years, I can tell already.

For a while now I have been shooting ambient videos and then displaying them on our flatscreen TV at home as a motion art project. During a recent stay at Hotel 1000 in Seattle I noticed that they provided a similar type of soothing visual/audio art which guests can have playing in the background. Now tha ltd. , a company out of Japan has come out with a very cool product called FRAMED*. FRAMED* is a large format screen designed to display digital art and motion graphics. The 40" Samsung LED Full HD screen is wrapped in a matte-black frame and powered by an Intel Core i5 processor. The accompanying iPhone app allows the digital artwork to be changed and in some cases manipulated via your phone.

What is really intriguing about this new venture is the fact that it provides digital artist with a new model of distribution. Artist's will have the ability to upload their work to the FRAMED* store which will then be available for purchase by owners of the digital frame.

I recently finished shooting stills on a cross-media campaign (HD video and photography) for BC Rugby. The crew at Brudder organized the 2 day shoot and produced all the video content.

The creative called for lots of rain and mud, and did the weather Gods ever cooperate. We had a rain machine set-up but by day 2 it became pretty irrelevant. So hat's off to all the athletes who braved the wet and the cold without a single complaint.

It's been gray and rainy for too long. And the long-term forecast is calling for more gray and more rain. Recently, a client's request for additional imagery had me revisiting a shoot we did with the Assembly crew last August in a sun drenched Vermont. Ah, those balmy summer evenings, how I wish you were near.

Spike Jonze and Arcade Fire collaborating on a short film…….yeah that's probably going to suck. Yes, I'm being sarcastic. The film entitled "Scenes from the Suburbs", co-written by the band's Win and Will Butler and directed by Jonze, will be premiering at the Berlin International Film Festival on Feburary 12.

Until its North American debut we can always enjoy the AF video "The Suburbs" which contains scenes from the film.

I remember finding a lost Polaroid picture floating in a street puddle when I was 7 years old. The picture wasn't anything remarkable: just a family having fun at a birthday party. I remember looking at the photo and even at that young age, feeling like I was a voyeur in these peoples lives. I couldn't put the picture down.

That is probably why I find this story so compelling. Some think it is fake. The 7 year old inside me hopes it is not.

A while back I came across Matt Logue's photo series "Empty LA". The eerily beautiful images depict areas of Los Angeles completely devoid of people. The photos were made over a period of 4 years, in a variety of locations around LA. I am drawn to empty spaces both in imagery and in the real world, so needless to say, I found this project very compelling.

Then recently a friend forwarded me the video "Running on Empty" by Ross Ching. Inspired by Logue's work Ching constructed a time-lapse piece which combines stills and video to create his own empty L.A. . Ching also provides an interesting mini-tutorial on how it was all done. Interesting stuff.

burtynsky's OIL

This weekend I finally got a chance to flip through the incredible new photobook by Edward Burtynsky - one of the worlds most important and well respected contemporary photographers. The book entitled OIL was recently announced as the winner of the And/or Book Award 2010 for photography . It is the culmination of a 10 year photographic exploration on the subject of oil and the massive effect it has had on all our lives and on the planet. Burtynsky has the rare ability to produce imagery that is beautiful and at the sometime unnerving. I highly recommend getting your hands on a copy of this book. It is a monumental work.

help a Brüdder out

I recently spend sometime in a freezing cold meat locker photographing a filmmaker friend and colleague of mine for a fund-raising promotion. RJ Sauer from Brüdder Productions is looking for a little help getting to the Arctic. Why? To shoot his short film entitled "Anirniq", which is set in the remote Arctic tundra along the ice floes off Baffin Island. And as anyone who has ever traveled to the far north knows, transportation to this remote location is insanely expensive.

However RJ is not looking for a simple handout (though he will take those as well). In cooperation with The Assembly Collective, Brüdder Productions is offering to provide its high-end HD video and photography services for 50% off. The funds generated will then go to help get his film made.

Brüdder does fantastic work and has an impressive client list which includes Starbucks, Microsoft, Nivea, EA Sports and Price Waterhouse Coopers. So participants will not only receive a great deal on a top quality video and still production, they will also have the unique opportunity to be "intimately involved in an exciting film project and adventure from start to finish".

Stop motion photography has seen quite a resurgence in the last little while. Great examples include the Oren Lavie video, the tilt-shift work of Keith Loutit, and the award winning spot My City Moves Me by my friend Kris Grunert.

This piece by Tilles Singer adds an additional element by using found imagery and reshooting it. This piece is very cool. Hat's off to Tilles for the amount of effort involved in pulling it off. Enjoy.

I've got to say, I'm loving the new combo of my Drobo and Pogoplug. Dead simple to set-up and administer. I have approximately 3TB of photos, video and various other data stored on the Drobo, which with Pogoplug, is now accessible to a laptop or iPhone from anywhere I have internet access. This set-up prevents the "oh shit, I left that file at the studio" syndrome, which I used to be synonymous for.

Next step....maybe working Pogoplug into my backup routine like this.

haiti after

This beautiful video montage was shot by Khalid Mohtaseb on the 5DmkII in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti. It shows the resilience of the Haitian people and acts as reminder to us all that, even though Haiti is no longer making front page news, the hardship and suffering is far from over.

If you have not yet given to Haiti relief and are able to do so, I recommend visiting MSF/DWB, the Red Cross or others.

I have noticed a great new movement occurring in the last little while. Photographers and other visual artist donating pieces of their art for sale, with the proceeds going to charity. The first to catch my attention was collect.give, where moneys go to various charities. In the wake of the Haiti disaster several other online charity art sites have sprung up. They include Images without Borders, the Booooooom HELP HAITI Art Fundraiser, the Haiti Relief Benefit Print Sale and Lifesupport from Wall Space.

Great work at great prices for a great cause. Please check them out.
